Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and the Taliban-forgotten?

The Bush/Cheney Neocons screwed the Afghanistan people and our troops who were fighting the terrorists who really did attack our country on 9/11 by running away from the ‘war on terror’ hijacking it for neoconservative desires.

The Taliban is regaining strength in Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden is still free and in charge of Al Qaeda which is gaining strength and free reign in western Pakistan and throughout northern and western Africa. We can’t do anything substantial to curtail their growth because we are bogged down in Iraq while seriously running down the morale and readiness of our military.

Our continuing occupation of Iraq is harming us while allowing Al Qaeda to grow in organization, strength and territory to be able to set up training camps along with a platform to attack us.

So now along the Afghanistan and Pakistan border, where we should have had a strong presence for several years, the training camps are back in business. It was just such a training camp from the same region the 9-11 attacks were planned and launched from.

General Pervez Musharraf is a military dictator who acquired power by way of a coup. He’s just the latest example of ‘our dictator in the pocket’, at least until it all falls apart. Human Rights in Pakistan are horrendous, they have weapons of ‘mass destruction’, those who would attack us are educated, harbored and trained within their borders, and bin Laden is protected there.

.

We commit, allow and turn our backs away from many atrocities because of some short term political goal. Our government puts the best spin on these episodes whenever they see the light of day and claim it’s all in an effort to fight terrorism. But are we truly any better when we endorse the same human rights abuses as our foes? (the evil act of torture)

.

The fight against terrorism is more often a fight for economic influence disguised as a fight for freedom. When we support a country whose government mutilates human rights we hand an ideological victory and propaganda tools for those we call our enemies to use against us. Where they suppress speech we should encourage it. Where they use violence we should react with restraint, kindness, food and medical care. We should never provide military assistance or have close diplomatic ties with any country that violates the civil liberties of its citizens.

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

I don’t want anyone thinking that I’m saying the Bushies weren’t involved in 9-11. At a minimum they were incompetent and desired something to happen to hasten their PNAC desires. I’m inclined to believe they wanted something to happen and they let it regardless of what it might be.

Same stuff different day

This is a letter to the editor I wrote which was printed in ‘The Sun Herald’, of Biloxi, Mississippi on Sept 16, 1987.

Our country has no right to militarily overthrow the government of any other country simply because we do not agree with their political system.

The conservatives claim that communism, if allowed to exist in Nicaragua, is a threat to the United States. I strongly disagree. The real threat is the existence of conditions which allow communism to grow within third world countries, such as poverty, ignorance, lack of adequate health care and human rights.

Those are the conditions which exist under the rule of right wing dictators. The seeds of Marxism are sown in this environment and gradually grow to maturity. The mistake we make is that once communism rears its ugly head in a country, we support the rightist dictatorship even more, thereby losing the trust and respect of the average citizens in that country.Someone in the United States might say, “How can anyone choose communism over democracy?” But if America supports your leader and you’re living on a dirt floor while your baby is dying and your brother is rotting in prison because he spoke his mind, you might think, “How could communism be any worse than the way I have it now?”

If we wish to stop the rising tide of communism we must stop supporting or tolerating right wing dictators and let the people of the country know this. At the same time we must encourage and help growth in the economy, education and human rights of these countries.

Tyranny and suppression of human rights exists on both extremes of the political spectrum. War is a poor answer to a human problem. Don’t let the militaristic leaders of the conservative party lead you to believe the only road to peace is by the gun. They are wrong. The only road to peace is through human understanding, kindness, and a belief in what a true democracy can accomplish.

Marxism has diminished as the greatest right wing threat, although I do believe it will be resurrected when their attention is drawn to South America. The new greatest threat ever is radical fundamentalist Islam which is morphing into a paranoid dread of all Islam. Now we have neoconservatives, who had their roots among the conservative Republicans way back then in the Reagan administration. They still choose war as the best choice to a human problem.

Vulture Funds; why they hate us.

Greg Palast reports on Vulture Funds. Vulture funds are a horribly corrupt method of earning a few million bucks from the poorest of nations. A corporation will buy up a loan of a poverty stricken government in Africa right before the debt is about to be forgiven then sue that government for ten times the amount they bought the debt for. It may be legal but it is still theft and very immoral and must be stopped.

This is one of the reasons why they hate us. Will Bush help stop this or just turn away and let the practice continue?

worried about Iran?

I’m still not doing real well at the moment. I have managed to get my organic garden in the back yard in again this year. I just do a little bit and rest and do a little bit and rest some more. I still have a little more to do and everything else I should or would like to be doing suffers a bit but I’ve had a little organic garden for a lot of years now and the world just doesn’t seem right without it. The world seems very screwy right now anyway….no that’s not right …..the world is very screwy right now.

I’m very worried about Iran at the moment. The president is being attacked by his own party at the moment and can’t get his way on anything going through Congress; although he did get his way on the war thanks to a handful of backstabbing Democrats. (I’m giving Senator Murray a little bit of a break because I know she wanted to get money to the vets. Of course her vote does help insure we will have more disabled vets.)

I worry about this powerful and arrogant man being in such a weak position politically. All the issues were arguing about, the corruption investigations, bringing the troops home from Iraq and even his very low (32%) approval rating will all be on the back burner once he decides to attack Iran. I truly hope he’s facing strong pentagon resistance but he has managed to squeeze two carrier groups in the Persian Gulf.

Here's something that was on Raw Story this morning June 11. It goes along very well with the interview below.

US confirms it is arming Sunni insurgents
John ByrnePublished: Sunday June 10, 2007

The U.S. military has confirmed that it is arming Sunni insurgent factions to try to contain al-Qaida in Mesopotamia, according to a report in Monday's New York Times by veteran Iraq correspondent John Burns.

"With the four-month-old increase in American troops showing only modest success in curbing insurgent attacks, American commanders are turning to another strategy that they acknowledge is fraught with risk: arming Sunni Arab groups that have promised to fight militants linked with Al Qaeda who have been their allies in the past."
