Veto Means Second Chance

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

Well it passed the Senate and is on its way to conference and the Bush veto.Emergency supplementals, H.R.1591 and S.965 both have some very good points, especially for long ignored domestic emergencies and the growing calamity of troop readiness. Representative Murtha and my own Senator Murray did a great job of ensuring that injured veterans are properly cared for along with supplying the neglected Arm Forces with the proper life-saving equipment, training and rest they so desperately need.

"If we don't stop extending our troops all around the world in nation-building missions, then we're going to have a serious problem coming down the road."

Gov. George W. Bush - October 3, 2000

H.R.1591 removes the U.S. out of Iraq one year too late while the Senate version does a little better by moving the troops out of Iraq by March ’08. Neither bill does anything to prevent the president from making the same disastrously ill-conceived, unjust and illegal mistake in Iran that he made in Iraq. Senator Webb has a bill that would do just that but it was never given a chance to be included as an amendment.

Fortunately, we will be able to rely on the president’s choice to veto funding the troops. This will give another attempt at bringing the troops home sooner along with denying funds for attacking Iran. Thanks to presidential arrogance we will get a second chance.I fear what the president may try to do next. I wonder how Congress will act if he attacks Iran. It would be the ultimate diversion from all the problems his administration is up against now. A diversion that would bring calamity and ruin in its wake. I'm even a little worried about the Easter break when Congress is out of session.

Is it time to do the next ‘protect America now or we’ll all die war’ by attacking Iran. Two carrier groups, mine sweepers and no telling what else all ready to deliver ‘shock and awe’ on country number three.

I worry about Russia’s closeness to Iran; they are joined by the Caspian Sea and they have sent defensive missiles to Iran. Will they be drawn into this war? Saudi citizens are sending money in the millions to the Sunnis of Iraq. Will they be drawn into the war?

There’s a long list of problems that were caused when President Bush and his administration blatantly lied us into this Iraqi quagmire. They led America into believing that we were under an imminent threat of attack from Iraq. That mushroom clouds would appear on our shores if we did not move quick enough. Of course this was all lies. And now, they want us to believe and trust them, again.

I’m greatly concerned that given the Bush administration's abysmal track record on world diplomacy any war like action in Iran will blow up in their faces bringing great harm not only to the innocent men, women, and children in Iran but also to our nation.
Will they be igniting the spark, similar to the flash that lit WW I, which causes nations to divvy up sides for another world war?
Will the world view us as the aggressors and retaliate economically if not militarily against our interests?
Someone once said that the next world war would be fought with modern weapons including nukes; the next war after that would be fought with sticks and stones.

Was David Hicks tortured into confessing?

Once again this is an attempt to justify the fruits of torture to the American people, or at least to those who follow along so sheepishly. The whole thing is extremely un-American.
Close Guantanamo! Amnesty Speaks Out

His confession was the result of torture and ill-treatment making it completely invalid. We are also expected to take the word of only his military accusers. This was a highly unconstitutional immoral and again it must be stressed a completely un-American exercise in shame with much more in likeness to the old Soviet Union, China, or any other authoritarian government.

At a hearing in Guantánamo on 26 March 2007, in his sixth year of detention and at the start of the US administration’s second attempt in the last three years to try him before a military commission, Australian national David Hicks pleaded guilty to one specification under the charge of “providing material support for terrorism”.
This plea was made after years of indefinite detention, isolation and allegations of torture and ill-treatment, and after a day in which Hicks’ legal representation was reduced by the military judge overseeing the commission. After the plea, proceedings were adjourned and were expected to be reconvened later in the week after the details of the plea had been worked out.

S.965 - a few months better

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

S.965 - emergency supplemental appropriations
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:SN00965:@@@D&summ2=m&

Like H.R. 1591, S.965 has some very good points, especially for rural and farm emergencies and troop readiness. It also moves the troops out of Iraq in little less than one year (March ’08) which is a little improvement over H.R. 1591. But, like the house bill it also does nothing to prevent the president from making the same mistake in Iran that he made in Iraq.

Senator Webb has a bill that would do just that which I would love to see added as an amendment. I’ve let my senators (Murray & Cantwell) know along with Senators Reid and Durbin. Taking funds away from a war with Iran would be a big improvement. We’ll see; I’m not holding my breath though.

Hate Has Always Been Evil

Back during Israel’s incursion into Lebanon I remember a caller on CSPAN who with a calm fatherly voice speak of, after identifying himself as a Christian, how wrong a cease fire between Israel and Lebanon would be. He told a story of how he along with his father and brother had to go into their barn and kill all the rats, big ones and little ones. How sad when a person who claims to represent reason and family values can so calmly call for bloodthirsty violence, terror from the skies and murder.

The sad thing is these types of words and the actions they’re meant to initiate inflame the haters. Violence whether it’s from shadowy terrorist or from terrifying smart bombs is always counterproductive except for those who want to keep hate supercharged. We have a huge hate problem toward everyone of Middle Eastern ancestry now from the 30 to 40 percent of conservatives, many who claim to be good to outstanding Christians, who are the presidents’ supporters. Many want all Muslims, including citizens, to carry special identification identifying them as so but they would prefer Muslim round-ups and expulsion at home with bombing to the point of genocide else where.

They believe greater violence is the only answer. Those who disagree will be called un-American traitors in league with the terrorists, bad Christians and anti Semitic. Evil can and often does exist on all sides in a war. Many are feeling comfortable cuddling up with wickedness. They are deceiving themselves that they are doing God’s will while calling evil good. Bravado driven nationalism that disguises hate in an illusion of the defense of mom and apple pie does not improve its immorality. Hate is evil, it always has been and it always will be the largest obstacle to fitting through the needles eye. They frighten me and I worry how they will use this to push us further into fascism.

Islamo-fascism is the new marketing term for our struggles that has been officially adopted by this administration. It’s an incorrect term. The most extreme are authoritarian and theocratic with about as much love for human rights as our favorite trading partner, China or our favorite oil producer, Saudi Arabia. What they aren’t, like our neoconservative dominated administration, are corporatists. Fascists use religion as a tool to further the propaganda to be seen as its great protector. In a theocracy it’s all about the religion and everyone, corporations included, are under its thumb.

If we are looking for a new term how about the ‘Struggle against Al Qaeda’. After all they were the ones who attacked us. They are the ones who were ignored when the Bush administration abandoned that battle in favor of Iraq and now they are the ones along with the Taliban who have grown stronger.

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."
G.W. Bush

There’s another incorrect mantra, frequently repeated on CSPAN and other places where they can be found lurking, of the dangerous right….’Not all Moslems are terrorists but all terrorists are Moslems.’

These places have all had or are continuing to have problems with terrorists who are not from Islam.

There’s no shortage of people who mistakenly think terrorism is the answer to their political or economic problems. They are not a homogenous group they are all different with different solutions to each circumstance.I wish they would learn from such great men as Gandhi, Martin Luther King, John Paul II, Desmond Tutu and others for a better way to attack their problems. Much more can be accomplished through nonviolence.

'An eye for an eye for an eye would make the whole world blind.'
Gandhi

"In struggling for human dignity the oppressed people of the world must not allow themselves to become bitter or indulge in hate campaigns. To retaliate with hate and bitterness would do nothing but intensify the hate in the world. Along the way of life, someone must have sense enough and morality enough to cut off the chain of hate. This can be done only by projecting the ethics of love to the center of our lives."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

"As an essential part of its fight against all forms of terrorism, the international community is called to undertake new and creative political, diplomatic and economic initiatives aimed at relieving the scandalous situations of gross injustice, oppression and marginalization which continue to oppress countless members of the human family. History in fact shows that the recruitment of terrorists is more easily achieved in areas where human rights are trampled upon and where injustice is a part of daily life.”
John Paul II

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”
Desmond Tutu

End this bloody occupation

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

The whole world and history are looking at us now.

If we are strong, if the faith we have in our nation is strong, if what we have always told ourselves what we believed about the endurance of our constitution is strong; then we should move forward with guts.

What image do we want to leave the world and our children’s, children’s, children’s children? That of weak complacency in the unraveling of 200 years of liberty or steadfast support for what our founding fathers created and our ancestors as well as ourselves swore allegiance to.

The eyes of history are upon us and the weight of our own consciences. Will we fail at this moment of history and allow ourselves to slip ever so much more closely into an authoritarian existence. An existence we all once talked so bravely about never allowing on our shores. Or will we have the courage equal to the challenge that this moment of history has thrown upon us?

H.R.1591- phooey on Blue Dogs

H.R.1591 has some very good points, especially for the Gulf Coast and troop readiness but its biggest drawback is that it removes the U.S. out of Iraq at least one year too late. It also does nothing to prevent the president from making the same mistake in Iran that he made in Iraq.

I’m sure this will make it through the house. I will be surprised if the House version makes it through the Senate and shocked if the President doesn’t veto it.

The administration will not be getting its emergency supplemental for the Iraq occupation any time soon.

The battle is far from over and hope has not yet been exhausted.

Al once again demonstrates why he is the best candidate for president. He’s respected at home and around the world which would be very good for pulling our nation’s reputation out of the dirt, more so if he were to win the Nobel Peace prize. He’ll have big coat-tails which will ensure he’ll continue to have a friendly Congress. The power will be there for most of the environmental changes he would like to see occur. Rep. Gene Taylor - Patriot

My wife and I lived in Biloxi, MS for five years during the late 80’s early 90’s. The Republicans did a good job of letting their ugly side out yesterday. First with the shabby treatment given to Vice-President Gore during the global warming hearings then with the shameful way they were going to attempt to treat the Katrina victims. Representative Taylor got our blood going and he deserved and received the support from his fellow democrats along with a ‘standing o’. He got one here at home, too.

Confession of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

First off this is another attempt at administration misdirection designed to divert our attention from administration crimes such as the purging of federal prosecutors and the vast number of congressional investigations. It is also interesting that the evangelical churches finally came out strongly against torture within the last couple of days. This is an attempt to justify the fruits of torture to the American people, or at least to those who follow along so sheepishly.

The confession of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed means nothing. The whole thing is extremely un-American. His confessions were the result of torture and ill-treatment making them completely invalid. We are also expected to take the word of only his military accusers. No lawyers, press or human rights personnel were present. This was a highly unconstitutional immoral and again it must be stressed a completely un-American exercise in shame with much more in likeness to the old Soviet Union, China, or any other authoritarian government.

Close Guantanamo and give those there the kind of justice of which our nation was once famous. This is a war crime and all those involved should be prosecuted all the way up to the head torturer in chief, George W. Bush, a traitor to ‘mom apple pie and the American way’.

End This War

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

The first adversary of the Iraqi people was definitely the Bush administration, its cohorts and followers.

No matter how they feel about us we owe a debt to Iraq for the death and destruction caused by us. That should never be forgotten. It should also never be forgotten that the military was used under false pretenses. Those against the invasion were ignored from the insignificant little people to the much more influential and knowledgeable, deserving a fair hearing, along with the millions protesting at home and across the world. The predicted results ensued resulting in unnecessary anguish and carnage.

War crimes were committed. Bush policies of rendition, torture, indiscriminate use of weapons improper among civilian populations, seriously overused troops in a deadly supercharged environment, profiteering, and negligent planning wrapped up in a refusal to admit any mistakes have made Bush Neoconservative’s opponents of peace toward the US and Iraq and the people of the region if the instability spreads.

Not only have Neocon policies become the best recruiting tool for Al Qaeda and like-minded groups but they have also set up a wonderful training ground of authentic war experience against their most reviled enemy; us. Those in charge are to blame for this mess because they’re the ones that put the horror in motion.

They also screwed the Afghanistan people and our troops who were fighting the terrorists who really did attack our country by running away from the ‘war on terror’ hijacking it for neoconservative desires. The Taliban is regaining strength in Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden is still free and in charge of al-Qaeda.

Money has been wasted, misused and stolen causing us to rely on China and other nations to finance our illegitimate war while keeping the lifestyles of the powerful undisturbed. They’ve left the brunt of domestic sacrifice for this war of lies to be carried by the military families with little support from the Republican chicken hawks who so frequently love to envelop themselves with flags, yellow ribbons and military paraphernalia.

Al Qaeda is responsible for their share of the violence but it’s a relatively small percentage of the overall violence. Because of this I was also tempted to say that the Iraqi people are also their own worst enemy, but that’s not really the case. These poor tortured families are surrounded by such incredible terror, so many times worse than what we entertain ourselves with, from a myriad of evil beings, with blood and gore in our theaters for the thrill of being safely shocked.
.
Horror show reveals Iraq’s descent
.
The second great enemy in Iraq is the power lust of the few, along with the hate driven desire for revenge carrying fear and ignorance as its allies. Hate is truly evil. To be able to look into the eyes of another human being, a child perhaps, and be able to place an electric drill through their skin or eyes is truly evil. So many people are suffering an incredibly insidious hell of a tortuous death. It’s shocking how exceedingly cruel people can be once they see the others as less than human. The hate that exists is growing even stronger in an environment where fear and revenge has become the master. Yes, the second great enemy in Iraq is the hate fueled power lust of the few and the insecurity it fosters for generations to come.

If our presence in Iraq is futile or more destructive to them and us than our absence then we must leave.

The very minimum the United States should do is;

* Make certain that the world and the Iraqi people know we have no intention of having permanent bases.

* Turn over the building of the country to the people who live there.

* Apologize to the nation the Iraqis and the world for the lies that were used to start this war and the crimes that were committed during the occupation. President Bush and Vice President Cheney should both resign. If they won’t resign then they must be impeached.

* Bring ALL neighboring countries into discussions on the future of Iraq and the region.

* We should be listening to Murtha and the others who have plans for a phased withdraw and redeployment.
Plans? We Got Plans

* We must also be doing something along the lines of setting up refugee centers for the many displaced people. These centers should be run by people who know how to do this sort of thing like charitable groups along with the UN. Syria and Jordan are awash in refugees. Considerable aid should be coming from us to aid these people.

The leaders of the various factions must be dealt with politically at the table of peace and compromise. Reconciliation is imperative. Archbishop Desmond Tutu had great success dealing with the results of the hate such conflicts generated. He should be listened to now and his methods seriously investigated, otherwise I fear the violence will continue for generations to come. This is ultimately the greatest challenge of Iraq and sadly around the globe and within each of us. We must begin to address all the problems that lead to groups using terror as a weapon and embracing extreme radical forms of fundamentalism. That’s going to take the rest of the world helping out, too, after all we’re ALL to blame for the mess the worlds in right now.

What will we do?

The whole world and history are looking at us now.

If we are strong, if the faith we have in our nation is strong, if what we have always told ourselves what we believed about the endurance of our constitution is strong; then we should move forward with guts.

An existence we all once talked so bravely about never allowing on our shores. Or will we have the courage equal to the challenge that this moment of history has thrown upon us?

Many Reasons to Impeach Bush/Cheney

The Office of Special Plans purposely lied the American people into a war with Iraq. The whole administration is guilty of treasonous type activity and likely war crimes for invading a country on false pretenses, intentionally using illegal and inappropriate weapons around civilian populations and misrepresenting our reasons for being there to the American public and the world.

The Bushies are now doing the same thing with Iran. This administration has lost all credibility on foreign policy especially when they are gearing up for war. They manufactured evidence to mislead Congress and the American people into a war with Iraq. They appear, macho tough talk included, to be doing the exact same thing with Iran.

Other recent events have highlighted the necessity for impeachment of both Bush and Cheney.

The unconstitutional stance on Habeas Corpus; from the mouth of our Attorney General, “…the Constitution doesn't say that every individual in the United States or every citizen has or is assured the right of habeas corpus. It doesn't say that. It simply says that the right of habeas corpus shall not be suspended.”Alberto Gonzales

Posse comitatus has been damaged considerably by the 109th Congress by sneaking in a provision for the president to be able to use the military as a police force. To quote the New York Times, “Beyond cases of actual insurrection, the president may now use military troops as a domestic police force in response to a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, terrorist attack or to any “other condition.”
